DIY Backgammon Board
The first step in building a backgammon board is actually the measuring of the checkers. Standard checkers are 1.75 inch in diameter and about 0.375 inch in height. The triangles (points) and the bolt (bar) on the playing surface of the backgammon board have to be constructed in proportion to the checkers' size, so the checkers will neither bounce each other and nor disappear out of sight.
Overall, each quarter of the board have to be wide enough to accompany 6 checkers comfortably, while the board has to be high enough to fit 12 checkers with a big enough space between the two opposite sides of the board for the rolling of the dice. The points on the backgammon board can bulge or be engraved, either way they have to contrast in colors.
The checkers thickness also effects the height of the walls of the backgammon board. Normally, the walls have to be a bit higher than a couple of piled checkers, especially in a folding backgammon suitcase (as opposed to a tabletop). In this case, make sure the suitcase can contain all the game pieces (plus the dice, the doubling cube and the dice cups) and be shut properly.
In addition, the interaction between the playing surface and the game pieces, including the checkers, the dice and the doubling cube, must be a perfect match. They should not stress, slide or squeak when contact each other. In any case, the playing surface should be covered with a softer substance (cork, leather, etc) to avoid loud sounds of dice rolling (especially if the board is planned to be taken to a multi-player backgammon tournament).
