Emmanuel David Backgammon Tables
A keen backgammon player, collector and a designer combined these three interests into a lucrative occupation – designing luxurious backgammon boards for the top echelon. His latest collection of backgammon designs, Gold Rush, is made of Dacryl, a smooth, light weight, crystal like material and covered with transparent gold leaves. Limited to four copies, the backgammon coffee table is priced at €15,000 (about $20,000).
Backgammon has always been the favorite game of the rich and famous, thus designer backgammon boards as extravagant and expensive as they may be (recent examples include boards containing 60,000 diamonds and a boards made of parts Formula A1 racing car) do have their potential buyers. One of Emmanuel David's Gold Rush backgammon tables is already entertaining the guests of the Parisian Hotel Fouquet.
His other clientele include contemporary art collectors and "women who want to give their husbands a rare and unique gift" as he said awhile ago in an interview to the good living internet magazine First Luxe. David, who has been collecting backgammon boards of various origins and periods long before starting to create collectable pieces himself, sees his collection as bordering art and design, and he hopes that on top of serving as a beautiful, useful piece of furniture the boards' unique design would inspire the players to play the game differently.
David's backgammon tables are all made by an exceptionally thin layer of Dacryl, carry his trade signature E. David and come in limited editions of up to 4 pieces. To assimilate his collections among the elite of the backgammon community, David tries to visit the major events held every summer in the south of France, such as the Monte Carlo World Backgammon Championship, the Riviera Cup and others. He also dreams of organizing a backgammon tournament for 16 players, with all games played on the boards of his design.
